Joe Choi grew up being surrounded by music at an early age. He wrote poetry, began playing guitar, and soon began to write songs.
Just as soon as Joe began to play guitar, Joe also began to lead worship at his home church and also at his high school.
After high school, Joe graduated from Rutgers College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and with a minor study in Music. Joe received encouragement regarding his poetry from his professors especially from a professor who was also a renowned poet from New York City named Anselm Berrigan. Much of Joe's songwriting and music was shaped by his time here.
After college, Joe became the electric guitarist for a band in Seattle named King's Fools (now called Kings).
Shortly afterwards, Joe moved to Redding, CA, where he attended and graduated from both the School of Supernatural Worship (2 terms) and the School of Supernatural Ministry (1st Year) at Bethel Church.
While Joe lived in Redding, Joe traveled and played electric guitar for many artists including Kim Walker-Smith & Chris Quilala (Jesus Culture), Brian & Jenn Johnson, and many others for various and several conferences and events. Joe also recorded electric guitar for Brian Johnson's "We Believe" album, the "Bethel Songs: Here in America" album, and one of Toronto Airport Fellowship's Catch the Fire albums.
Joe later moved to Weaverville, CA, for a mentorship with Steve Backlund who was the senior pastor of Mountain Chapel. Joe helped lead worship for Sunday services, Church conferences, and other events at Mountain Chapel such as the Ignited Hope Ministries' conferences. It was here also that Joe recorded his first album, "Son". This was in 2006.
Joe debuted with his first album, “Son”, and it caused a ruckus with secular and Christian audiences alike in its refreshing discussion of what worship is.
In 2007, Joe and other songwriters ventured out on a songwriter project at Bethel Church headed by the accomplished songwriter Jon Mohr. They produced a compilation album called “Bethel Songs: Here in America”. This album featured four of Joe's songs- "I Wait", "Just One Look", "Shine", and "Mystery".
In 2007, Joe's song, "I Wait", was published by Sparrow Records and recorded by Steve Green on his album, “Songs of Worship: Always.”
In 2009, Jesus Culture also recorded part of Joe's song, "Just One Look", on their album, “Consumed.”
In 2010, a local and major radio station in the Seattle area, Spirit 105.3 FM (KCMS), chose Joe's song, "Daylight", as one of the winners in a music contest called the Local Music Project.
In 2010, Joe recorded his second full-length album, “Daylight Comes”. This was an important album to Joe in how it addressed the years between 2008 and 2010 where Joe and his family went through some very difficult times. Some of Joe’s friends and his son unexpectedly and tragically died during this time along with Joe overcoming an illness that left him in bed for two months. This album is filled with songs of hope, desperation, and encouragement. Many of the songs on the album were written in dedication to these lives that were lost including Joe’s song, "Daylight", which was dedicated to his son, Jeremiah, who died tragically in 2009. This particular song gave the album its title and also became critically acclaimed by Taxi, Spirit 105.3 FM (KCMS), and others.
In late 2011, Joe recorded his third full-length album and first instrumental album, “Sing Your Own Song: Volume One”. What started off as an idea Joe got from a dream he had about his daughter became a beautifully mellow and optimistic album filled with innocence, wonder, and fun. Though very different from his previous offerings, this album stayed consistent with Joe's way of pushing the envelope of creativity without compromising the heart of each album to connect listeners with God's Presence. Many people have called this album a "soaking album".
In very early 2012, three of Joe's songs from his first album "Son" were remixed by Brock Human from United Pursuit. Joe went back into the studio to re-record vocals for these remixes and these songs became a part of a compilation album by United Pursuit and Iris Ministries called "Let Hope Rise" also known as "Found #2". 100% of the album's proceeds will go towards Iris Ministries to help continue their effort to plant churches and bring relief in Mozambique, South Africa and in other nations around the world.
Currently, Joe and his family are travelling ministering in Churches and for ministry events that are opening their doors to them. When they are not travelling, they live in Washington state and belong to a local Church there in the city of Renton that they call family. The Church is also formally called International Christian Center.
Joe is also hoping to release a new album sometime in 2012.
